23 October 2019 - Technical Talk & Industry Insights

7th November 2019

On the 23 October, the YMF LSEC hosted at University College London its annual industry insights and technical talk event for the Young Members in the London and South East Coast area.

This year’s guest speaker was Kevin Gormley (CEng FIChemE MEI SMAIChE), Chief Risk Engineer for QBE International Markets, speaking on the subject of accidents in the process industries, lessons learned, and their consequences in the current policies. Kevin started his presentation delivering an introduction to QBE and insurance risk engineering, emphasizing the role of insurance companies in the oil & gas industry, followed by a review of some classic process safety accidents, such as the notorious Phillips 66, in Pasadena, USA, which was coincidently its 30th anniversary (23/10/1989).

The technical talk was followed by an Industry Insights discussion panel with the presence of Kevin Gormley from QBE, Sophie Duffield and Laura Miles from GSK, Carl Cota and Colin Tamsett from Johnson Matthey, and Maria Papathanasiou from Imperial College London. Drawing on their years of experience, the panel members gave us some invaluable advice for new generation of chemical engineers and a unique insight into the variety of industries available to students upon graduation.

This year’s event was a success and concluded with a reception and networking session among the 40 attendees from industry and academia.

The YMF LSEC would like to thank again to the speakers for their contribution to the event, to the Chemical Engineering Researchers’ Society (CheERS) of UCL for sponsoring and to Billy Hue and Chunbing Huang, both PhD students at UCL for their help during the event.
