Overview

Organised by the National Early Careers Committee (NECC), Malaysia, the webinar aims to introduce the benefits of Chartership and the process of getting Chartered with IChemE. This webinar is aimed at those who wish to know - is Chartership something for them, and what are the next steps if they intend to pursue Chartership? The speakers will share about getting Chartered from an industrial and academic perspective and how being Chartered has impacted their life and career.

Speakers

Ms Tharshinye Soomaran, Country Manager, IChemE, Malaysia

Tharshinye is an Associate Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Management. She was a pioneer in setting up the 10th government agency under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

She has close to 15 years of experience in strategic management and planning and a record of achievement in progressively challenging roles in both private and public sectors. Tharshinye is a Country Manager at IChemE based in Kuala Lumpur. Her personal ethos can be summed up as H20 – Humble & Hungry, Zero Exceptions.

Ir Rafil Elyas, Principal Engineer & Founding Owner, East One-Zero-One Sdn Bhd

Rafil Elyas is currently the principal engineer and founding owner of East-One-Zero-One Sdn Bhd. East 101 is a process-based private consulting firm that specializes in the optimization and implementation of upstream and downstream oil and gas systems.

In addition, Rafil is an IChemE Malaysia Branch Board Member, Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a Fellow of IChemE with 27 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. In addition, Rafil is a registered Professional Engineer (PEng) with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). Rafil holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering degree from Syracuse University.

Dr Viknesh Andiappan, Associate Professor, Swinburne University

Dr Viknesh Andiappan currently serves as an Associate Professor at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. His area of specialization centres on optimisation of energy systems and supply chains. His research interests also include design and optimisation of net zero energy systems, synthesis of integrated biorefineries, industrial symbiosis planning, energy planning for greenhouse gas emission reduction and sustainable agriculture planning. Dr Andiappan is well-published and well-cited for a young researcher (over 70 publications with an h-index of 14) and presented several papers in various conferences. He was also shortlisted as a finalist for the IChemE Young Researcher Malaysia Award (2018 and 2019) and the Heriot-Watt University PRIME Award (2021). He was awarded the IBAE Young Researcher of the Year Award for his contributions in research. Dr Andiappan is an editorial board member for internationally peer-reviewed journals such as Process Integration and Optimization for Sustainability (Springer), and Frontiers in Sustainability. He is also a member of the reviewer board for Processes (MDPI). In addition, he serves as a technical committee member for several conferences.

Aside from research, Dr Andiappan is a Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia and a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). He also serves as the Vice Chair for the IChemE Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG) and was previously the University Roadshow Director. As the University Roadshow Director, he led efforts to promote the palm industry and the opportunities for chemical engineers, to young chemical engineering undergraduate students in universities around Malaysia.
