Overview

A forum organized by the Malaysia National Early Careers Committee (NECC) aimed at providing insights to young engineers on research-based career options in both industry and academia, with presentations by each speaker followed by a live, audience driven Q&A session. In particular, the event aims to bust myths regarding being a practicising researcher in the industry. The forum provides a platform for accomplished researchers to reflect on their journey towards becoming a researcher to help the audience decide if research is a match for life for them.

Speakers

Ir. Dr. Lim Mook Tzeng, Principal Researcher (Low Carbon Technologies), TNB Research Sdn. Bhd.

Ir. Dr. Lim Mook Tzeng is a principal researcher within a research institute, with focus on pilot scale research projects related to biomass and plasma technologies. One project of note is a research project co-funded by a Malaysian and South Korean power generation company related to improvement of biomass quality. Lim has filed eight intellectual properties related to biomass and plasma technologies, and is continuously engaged with potential industrial players to improve sustainability. These include a biomass pre-treatment plant & a non-thermal plasma combustion system. He has a PhD from the Uni. of Canterbury (New Zealand), and has postdoctoral experiences in New Zealand, Uni. Teknologi PETRONAS and Uni. of Newcastle (UK). His international experience also includes research exchanges with institutions in China, Japan, Denmark, and South Korea. Prior to his research career, Lim was mechanical engineer in various industries for several years, and is now a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (UK) & Board of Engineers Malaysia. He is in the working committee to perform feasibility studies for co-firing biomass in a 1000 MW power plant.

Ts. ChM. Noorazlenawati Borhan, Staff Researcher, Petronas Research Sdn. Bhd.

Noorazlenawati Borhan is a Staff Researcher R&D chemistry at PETRONAS Research Sdn. Bhd (PRSB), graduated with MSc in Applied Science from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). She is a registered member with Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM), Malaysian Board of Technologies (MBOT), Royal Society Chemistry (MRSC) and American Chemical Society (ACS). She has over 20 years’ experience in both downstream and upstream in O&G industries.

Earlier in her career, she was positioned in the Fuel Section of the Petroleum Products Group with her first assignment aimed at investigating the secret ingredient in competitor’s gasoline and diesel products. Her experience includes leading upstream projects in areas such as Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), Flow Assurance and produced three products with patents. Her great interest in R&D towards sustainability chemistry got her into the PETRONAS HSSE & Sustainability Forum 2020 –Top 10 finalists for Green Citizen Category and received a Gold Award in 32nd International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2021.

Dr. Chai Pui Vun, Assistant Professor & Head of Programme, Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, UCSI University

Dr. Chai Pui Vun obtained his BEng and PhD focused in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, with a further post-graduate diploma in Tertiary Teaching. Currently, he heads the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Programme at UCSI University Malaysia. His research areas of expertise include membrane fabrication, nanoscience, nanomaterial & nanoparticle synthesis, wastewater treatment, adsorption, optimization, membrane science, technology and design, sustainable and green technology. Dr. Chai's achievements to date include a Bronze Medal Award in the 5th Asia Engage Regional Conference and Silver Award for K-novasi 2019, as well as invited judges and reviewers for a number of research competitions and conferences.

Dr. Ng Boon Junn, Research Fellow, School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia

Dr. Ng Boon Junn obtained his BEng and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from Monash University Malaysia in 2015 and 2019, respectively. Currently, he is a post-doctoral research fellow in the School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia. He is an early career researcher who is active in the field of functional materials, photocatalysis and nanotechnology. His research primarily focuses on the rational design and development of highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalytic system for solar energy conversion. To date, Dr. Ng has published more than 15 Q1-papers in high impact factor journals such as Advanced Science and Applied Catalysis B: Environmental.
