A showcase of how education, industry and professional institutions can successfully collaborate.

This is a hybrid event. In person attendees get the added extra of networking, refreshments and a tour of the Calgavin facilities, to be followed by three presentations for in person and online attendees from The University of Birmingham, Calgavin and IChemE.

Speakers

Jonathan Seville, Professor of Formulation Engineering, University of Birmingham

Jonathan is Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham and previously Dean of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Surrey. As Head of Chemical Engineering at Birmingham he helped to start the UK’s first research centre in formulation engineering.

Jonathan is an experienced researcher in process engineering and has pioneered the use of radioactive tracers to image flow in industrial equipment. Among the numerous companies which have supported his research are Calgavin, Recycling Technologies, Unilever, Procter and Gamble, GSK, Merck Sharp and Dohme and Pfizer.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and was President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers in 2016–2017.

Martin Gough, Managing Director, Calgavin Ltd

Martin is founder and Managing Director of CALGAVIN Limited, formed in 1980 to research and develop enhancement solutions to improve the performance of tubular heat exchangers and reactors. The company provides a range of products and services in the field of heat exchange engineering including hiTRAN tube-side enhancement systems, thermal design, performance analytical services and de-bottleneck studies together with process specific new product development, and testing.

The company invests extensively in both fundamental and applied research. Martin has developed extensive experience internationally through the incorporation of university research programmes with on-going industrial needs.

Olivia Callaghan, Regional Support Executive, IChemE

Olivia is a Regional Support Executive working for IChemE covering the Midlands area. Focused on building relationships and developing engagement opportunities.

Olivia is engaged with stakeholders at all levels. She works with universities, organisations and active groups of IChemE Members to foster relationships that encourage membership development.

Sara Penrose, Vice Chair, IChemE Midland Member Group

Sara is a Chartered Chemical Engineer, with over 20 years of experience in plant optimisation, project management, plant management, and risk assessment. This has been gained in a variety of sectors, including food, resin, chemical and nuclear. This has given her extensive practise in critical thinking, lateral thinking and problem solving. These are the fundamental human skills which formed her foundation for continuously improving productivity, efficiency, safety and quality.

In 2018, she co-founded Sara Penrose Limited, a training and consultancy business focusing on helping companies improve quality, efficiency and growth by developing the fundamental human skills to achieve these business objectives. Maximising capabilities through an optimisation training programme, which ensure skills are practised, applied and embedded.

Sara also has two volunteer roles in IChemE. She is Vice Chair of the Midland Members Group (MMG) and also a mentor for chemical engineers working to achieve their chartership.
