Overview

The IChemE MK Committee are pleased to invite you to our Annual Meeting in which we will review 2020, present technical talks for next year and elect the Committee members. Please, do attend should you be interested in collaborating with us and be part of the Committee.

The Annual Meeting which will be followed by a technical presentation by Steve Wakefield, Head of the ISIS Experimental Operation Division at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

It’s an old joke, but its punchline references one of the properties of neutrons that make them enormously useful for investigating materials at the atomic level. In this talk, Steve Wakefield will highlight recent scientific research done at the ISIS Pulsed Neutron and Muon Source - part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire - using neutron scattering techniques. Steve will also explain how beams of neutrons are produced and controlled, showing that an extensive range of engineering disciplines and specialisms are needed to operate one of the UK’s large-scale science facilities.

Speaker

Steve Wakefield

Steve Wakefield studied natural sciences and chemical engineering at the University of Cambridge in the UK. He spent 10 years working in the food manufacturing industry in the UK and North America as a process instrumentation and controls engineer, developing and implementing advanced measurement and control techniques to improve product quality and manufacturing efficiency. In 2001, he joined the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to manage beamline engineering operations and installations. Steve is now head of the ISIS experimental operations division, and has responsibility for target, beamline and sample environment operations, user laboratories and experiment safety management. He is a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
