Overview

Trish Kerin, IChemE Safety Centre Director will be visiting Auckland to explore the cultural and governance findings and discuss how these are applicable to how process safety is managed in your company.

Adequately managing process safety is critical for continued reliability and business sustainability. Despite process safety being regulated in many places around the world, we still see examples every week of process safety incidents. So, this begs the question, what is missing in how we manage process safety? Governance is vital to ensure that appropriate systems and processes are in place, and having the right culture is critical to ensure people actually follow the processes. But these are areas that are much harder to regulate. For this reason, it is useful to look for lessons on improving governance and culture from other areas.

Recently in Australia the government initiated a Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry. While this was a review of the Australian sector, it uncovered many relevant items for review internationally. Some elements were very specific to that sector, but several apply to governance and culture more broadly.
