Overview

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is responsible for safely and reliably transporting gas to 2.7 million customers across the North East, northern Cumbria and most of Yorkshire. NGN is leading research to prove that our network can be converted to transport hydrogen in the future as the UK looks to reach its target of Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. In 2021 NGN opened the UK’s first Hydrogen Homes to the public, in partnership with Cadent Gas and the Government’s Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The semi-detached houses are based at the Low Thornley site near Gateshead and are fed by a hydrogen supply. They showcase 100% hydrogen appliances including, boilers, cooker, fires and meters which have been developed through the Hy4Heat programme.

HyDeploy sees a blend of up to 20% hydrogen added to the existing gas supply.  The use of the blended gas requires no change to appliances and customers do not notice any difference to their gas supply. The blended gas was successfully supplied to Keele University campus on a private gas network before the community of Winlaton near Gateshead became the first public network to receive 20% hydrogen blended with natural gas from August 2021. The 670 houses, along with the church, primary school and local shop are all successfully using the blend, with the hydrogen added at the ‘Hydrogen Grid Entry Unity’, located at Northern Gas Networks’ Low Thornley site.
