Overview

Ceres is a world-leading developer of next generation solid oxide fuel cell and electrochemical technology. Its asset-light, licensing model has seen it establish partnerships with some of the world’s largest engineering and technology companies, such as Weichai in China, Bosch in Germany, Miura in Japan, and Doosan in South Korea, to develop systems and products that address climate change and air quality challenges for transportation, industry, data centres and everyday living.

Spun out from Imperial College research, Ceres’ technology is protected by over 50-patent families, know-how and trades secrets. It has distinct advantages of robustness and very high efficiency in converting chemical energy into electricity, resulting in significantly reduced CO2 emissions even when operating on today’s fossil fuel infrastructure, is hydrogen ready for the future, and can form a critical building block in achieving a net zero carbon future. The Company employs around 300 highly skilled engineers and scientists, continually developing the technology to stay at the leading edge of its application. Ceres plans to invest around £5 million in the development of the reverse application of its core technology, as a solid oxide electrolyser for hydrogen and potential synthetic fuels, over the next 18 months.

This is the story of how innovation and engineering can deliver clean energy for the clean world.

Speakers

Dr Subhasish Mukerjee, Ceres Power Limited

Shubi joined Ceres in 2012 and is responsible for all aspects of the research and development of fuel cell technology. He has extensive experience in fuel cells and energy technologies having worked previously at BP and for 13 years at Delphi Corporation as Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Technology Leader. Dr. Mukerjee holds numerous patents and has been published widely on fuel cell technology. He gained his PhD at Yale University and postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University.

Dr Robert Leah, Ceres Power Limited

Rob is the Senior Principal Engineer at Ceres, with overall design authority for the core fuel cell technology. He joined Ceres in 2002 from Alstom and has been a core member of the team that has grown the Company from start-up to UK tech unicorn. Dr. Leah is the lead inventor in numerous granted patents. He has a MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, a PhD in Electrochemical Engineering from Imperial College and is an IChemE Fellow.

Rallou Chatzimichail, Ceres Power Limited

Rallou is a Chemical Engineer (MEng, MSc) and PhD candidate. She started working with Ceres in 2015 as a KTP Associate in collaboration with Lancaster University and joined full time in 2018. Rallou’s research and work has been focused on solid oxide fuel cell technology and she is a firm believer in energy solutions to address climate change. Rallou is passionate about inspiring younger individuals towards STEM and is an Ambassador for the UK’s Stem Learning network.
