Overview

In today's climate, the teaching process has becoming increasingly difficult since process safety must evolve in tandem with industry in order to keep up with the rapidly changing technological, cultural, and economic requirements of society.

Process safety (PS) is concerned with the prevention and control of incidents that may result in the release of hazardous materials or energy. Such incidents can result in toxic effects, fire, or explosions, as well as serious injuries, property damage, lost production, and environmental impact. Without fundamental knowledge of process safety or its main concepts, it is not clear to what one commits. Therefore, education at university level is crucial because it provides the basic information required for PS workers especially engineers. Nonetheless, knowledge must also be coupled with experience in order for students to comprehend and learn from actual case studies. In other words, the academic and the industry must work hand-in-hand to ensure that students have a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of the subject matter.

To ascertain the current state of affairs, we have conducted a massive survey to both the universities and the industries on the details regarding process safety teaching in the universities, especially to the undergraduate students. We have received 42 responses who teach process safety from 25 universities in nine different countries, including the Asia, US/Canada, Europe and Africa continents. We also received tremendous support from the industries that aim to get as much responses as possible from the industries (including the authorities), both local and international from different level of staff involving in process safety. From the in-depth analysis of the responses gathered from the survey, we found interesting data, trend/pattern and invaluable insight to further improve and enhance process safety teaching to another level, which all to be shared in this webinar.

Mimi Hassim, Associate Professor, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Mimi is an associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She received her first degree in chemical engineering from UTM, a masters degree from Loughborough University, UK and doctoral degree from Helsinki University of Tehnology, Finland both in the area of inherent occupational health and industrial hygiene for chemical process industries.

Mimi is an active alumni of the Global Young Scientist Academy particularly in the Women in Science working group, was a secretary general of the Malaysian Young Scientist Network under the Akademi Sains Malaysia, selected to participate in the ASEAN Science Diplomats Assembly, and represent Malaysia in the ASEAN-FINLAND Research Meeting in Helsinki. She is also the recipient of the Islamic Development Bank scholarship, an editor for several journals including the Process Safety and Environmental Protection Journal and has published more than 90 journal and indexed papers besides actively publishing articles in international and local books, magazines and newsletters. She was recently appointed to be part of committee that prepared the National OSH Master Plan 2021-2025 (OSHMP25) for Malaysia and also currently engaged to assist with the Strategy Education and Research for the OSHMP25.
