Overview

COVID-19 has brought on the rapid transition of University education to online platforms. Tutorial and practice sessions are typically more intimate and interactive, with smaller class sizes (<50). For many engineering modules, the teaching of these practice sessions comprise of active discussion with students, derivation of equations, explanation of concepts through drawings and diagrams. Fortunately, there are several tools and techniques that can be used by instructors to support our teaching activities. In this webinar, we will share some of the activities, tools and methods that can be used in supporting student learning in online tutorials.

This webinar will be of great interest to educators and trainers delivering courses in chemical engineering whether in blended or fully online formats and provides examples within UG education. Nowadays online collaboration is a necessity in the chemical and process industries and this webinar will also be of interest to anyone working in projects remotely or delivering CPD training as much of the content is transferable to other settings.

Presenters

Cindy Lee, National University of Singapore

Dr Cindy Lee is Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore, with a focus on Chemical Engineering Education and a keen interest in online and collaborative learning and teaching. Dr Cindy Lee completed her PhD under the Singapore-MIT Alliance working on supercritical fluid techniques and worked in research consultancy on supercritical fluid processing in the Netherlands for several years before joining Newcastle University in Singapore in 2012 as Lecturer, where we was the Director of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (DELT, 2017) and Director of Operation (Chemical, 2018). Her research interests include sustainable process design and development, as well as research-informed learning and teaching. She joined National University of University in 2019.

Akshat Tanksale, Monash University

Prof Akshat Tanksale is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Theme Leader for Carbon Capture, Conversion and Utilisation in the Woodside-Monash Energy Partnership at Monash University, Australia. He is a Teaching and Research academic, who is passionate about learning and teaching, but also has a strong research track record in the field of catalysis for green and sustainable fuels and chemicals production. A/Prof Tanksale completed his PhD at the University of Queensland in 2008, and joined Monash as a Lecturer in 2011. He has received numerous research and teaching awards, including the Caltex Award (2018) by the Australia and New Zealand Federation of Chemical Engineers for “exceptional course development and teaching of chemical engineering both within and external to the university” and the Dean's Award for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (2020).
