Overview

In this webinar we will hear from three speakers on the hot topic of plastics and packaging. Each speaker will discuss the specific challenges for their industry sector including the environmental or climate impacts. They will outline how they see the future focusing on more sustainable packaging opportunities and explain how their sector may address the challenges faced.

This is the first of three webinars in a series in which the F&DSIG are looking for members to get involved to share best practice in key strategic areas; packaging and plastics, food security and digitalisation, and sustainable food/beverage production. Join the webinar to find out more!

Aimed primarily at members of the Food and Drink Special Interest Group, the webinar may also be relevant to energy, water sector and potentially chemical materials. This is one of three webinars on key topics identified by the LSC related to Climate Change Strategy.

Presenters

Vikas Ahuja, Director Sustainability, Tetra Pak Oceania  

Vikas has had a career working in sustainability related finance, policy, consulting, technology and strategy. He has worked across R&D, tech start-ups, infrastructure, government, education and in FMCG sectors. He has recently moved to Tetra Pak from Coles and has just contracted the first beverage carton recycling facility to be built in Oceania.

Presentation summary

What are the challenges for beverage carton recycling and what is realistic for Oceania? Is the current focus on recycling just pushing the problem elsewhere? Life Cycle Assessments results will be shared, comparing various packaging formats. Discussion around setting and planning long term sustainability objectives and how to achieve them.

Jayne Paramor, Sustainability Manager, Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation Ltd.

Having commenced her career delivering analytical market research services to the multinational FMCG industry, Jayne has worked with some of the world’s largest retailers and manufacturers on everything from new product development to category management and strategic store layout design. Jayne has developed a deep understanding of the sector and the challenges presented by a constantly shifting shopper landscape.

Jayne’s recent focus has been plastic waste and pollution and the impact that it is having on the environment and the health of the world’s oceans. These experiences are brought together to support APCO’s work of delivering on the 2025 National Packaging Targets.

Michael Stumpf, Packaging Sustainability Manager, Mondelez Europe.

Michael achieved a packaging engineering degree (Dipl-Ing) at the Hochschule für Druck und Medien (Stuttgart) in 1999, and has since worked for a number of large multinationals such as Nestle, Unilever and Lidle. His career has spread across a variety of packaging roles and he's now the Sustainability Manager for Europe at Monzelez.
