Overview

An evening event with a technical presentation by the Technical Professional team from East 101 Sdn Bhd and time for networking over refreshments.

This event is free and open to all. Bring along your colleagues and introduce them to the Oil and Natural Gas Special Interest Group (SONG) and to IChemE.

Topic

The 2010s was a very exciting period, evidenced by the many advancements in science and technology such as ‘taking a picture’ of a black hole for the first time ever. It was also defined by the prevalent rise of machine learning applications, from convincing customers to buy the RM500 pair of shoes they don’t need to spreading misinformation to skew elections.

Open-source tools like Python play such a big role in facilitating these discoveries and progress. For example, the release of TensorFlow and PyTorch, (by Google and Facebook respectively) has allowed many people to successfully apply machine learning in solving problems in their domain of expertise without having to go deep into the theories behind neural networks.

Traditional industries like oil and gas are increasingly looking to embrace open-source tools, albeit at a much slower pace. For example, Schlumberger has incorporated Python in PIPESIM to allow for more advanced analyses and complex workflows to be performed during the flow assurance study.

In this talk, I will go through a series of examples highlighting how we can use these tools for engineering applications including:

  • automation of engineering software such as HYSYS
  • simulation of process controls
  • post-processing of simulation results
  • data visualization
  • analytics and machine learning
  • dashboarding.

I hope this talk will inspire and convince engineers in the oil and gas industry to incorporate open-source tools in their day-to-day work in the 2020s. Did I mention that these tools are free?

Speaker

Dr Anuar Hamid, Process Engineering Manager

Dr Anuar currently works at East 101 as Process Engineering Manager. He holds a PhD in Computational Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London and MEng Electrical Engineering (specializing in Control Systems) from the University of Manchester.

Time

Registration from 17:30 — the event will commerce at 18:00 and close at 20:00.
