Overview

The oil and gas industry has long suffered the effects of sand production and the damages that come with it. In response to this issue, various sand management strategies and tools such as production control and sand monitoring, downhole well completion tools, and topside desanders are deployed to eliminate/control this painful damage.

However, despite these robust sand management strategies and tools reaching a good maturity over the years, damages caused by sand production is still rampant in the industry – tens of millions of dollars spent yearly to mitigate damages. This is a clear indication of a gap in the current strategies that need to be addressed.

This gap can be attributed to the fact that the current sand handling methodologies involves complex analysis (modelling and monitoring) and intensive manual checks (eg filter, mesh sieve shakedown). In summary, these methods that are used to detect and predict sand production is too complex and must be simplified, become more scalable, and made more accurate.

Despite the buzz and hype that has clouded the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in sand management, it still stands as a genuine contender to usher in the future of sand management. Its ability to deal with complex analysis, perform accurate prediction and a high scalability factor makes it an exponential sand management tool.

This talk will give an insight as to how, Owl Analytics Solutions – a Malaysian-based start-up combined engineering and machine learning expertise to create a breakthrough automated sand detection and prediction A. called Predictsand.

This talk will provide an insight on the existing monitoring tools that can be leveraged by Predictsand and case studies involving its application on actual on-site sand detection and prediction. This talk will be a great platform to understand the challenges, the benefits, and the results of using AI to detect and predict sand production.

Speaker

Cooberan Thambirajah, Co-Founder Owl Analytics Solutions, Senior Process Engineer

Cooberan is a senior process engineer in the oil and gas industry who has extensive experience in designing and commissioning various processing facilities for offshore oil and gas. His experience includes crude and gas processing, sand separation-handling, and cryogenic application design.

He is a co-founder of a Malaysian-based start-up called Owl Analytics Solutions that combine multi-disciplinary engineering and AI expertise to create scalable and effective AI solutions that bring exponential value to clients.

His aim is to create multiple engineering solutions using AI that can be leveraged in every facet of the oil and gas industry – sand prediction, gas-lift optimisation, pipeline prediction, etc. He believes that AI can be a powerful ally in thriving against a new competitive frontier in the oil and gas industry.
