Overview

Biodiesel produced from renewable energy sources such as low-grade feedstocks (used cooking oil and animal fat) have drawn much interest and widely researched.

Transesterification, being the most efficient technique to produce biodiesel requires relatively clean feedstock. However, the low-grade feedstock is generally high in free fatty acids and other elements, which make them unsuitable to be processed directly in the conventional Transesterification plant.

This paper reviews the critical characteristics of low-grade feedstock and methods to produce good quality biodiesel.
