Webinar: Advances in Alarm Management Tools Developed at the University of Alberta
  • Date From 25th October 2022
  • Date To 25th October 2022
  • Price Free of charge, open to all.
  • Location Online: 15:00 BST: Duration: 1 hour.

Overview

According to various surveys, plant operators receive far more alarms than they can handle on a normal basis. Researchers at the University of Alberta have developed a smart analytics platform for the seamless integration of alarm and process (sensor) data complemented with process connectivity information.

The essential functionalities use advanced machine learning techniques for alarm visualisation, alarm performance evaluation and analysis, and rationalisation, thereby helping industrial processes to comply with the new standards. The tools have been used by process engineers and alarm management teams in Canada and elsewhere.

This webinar will also include a live demonstration of the toolbox.

Speakers

Harikrishna Rao Mohan Rao, PhD Student

Harikrishna Rao (Hari) is a PhD student in the Advanced Alarm Management and Design Group, supervised by Dr. Tongwen Chen. He is working with NSERC industrial partners to develop advanced techniques for the analysis and improvement of industrial alarm systems.

Hari has a BTech degree in Chemical Engineering and has seven years of industrial experience in various profiles such as Process Control and Automation, Product Reliability, Alarm Monitoring, and Fault Detection in the USA, India, Japan, and South Korea. He also holds two invention disclosures in the early online detection of abnormalities and component failures using sensor data.

Sirish L Shah, Emeritus Professor, University of Alberta

Sirish L Shah is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Alberta, where he held the NSERC-Matrikon-Suncor-iCORE Senior Industrial Research Chair in Computer Process Control from 2000 to 2012.

The main area of his current research is process and performance monitoring, system identification and design, analysis, and rationalisation of alarm systems. He has co-authored three books, the first titled “Performance Assessment of Control Loops: Theory and Applications", a second book titled “Diagnosis of Process Nonlinearities and Valve Stiction: Data-Driven Approaches”, and a more recent brief monograph titled “Capturing Connectivity and Causality in Complex Industrial Processes”.
