Overview

Mick Dawson of BHR gave a wonderful presentation on Mixing for Chemical Assisted Sedimentation & P Removal at our Mixing in the Water Industry event.

Unfortunately the webinar broke down and the recording was unusable. He has kindly offered to deliver an extended (60 min + 30 min questions) repeat of this, along with a second webinar on potable water mixing and a third on sludge mixing.

Mick’s presentation will cover:

  • background
  • clean water mixing applications
  • mixing objectives, design criteria and constraints
  • liquid blending design criteria: flow regime; blend time; mixture quality (coefficient of variation); pressure drop; installation size/length
  • performance of equipment for blending in pipes, channels and flash mixers
  • dosing into ‘empty’ pipes and channels, jet mixing in pipes and channels.
  • static mixers in pipes and channels - all common types/manufacturers in use covered eg twisted, structured and vortex generating by Chemineer, Sulzer, Statiflo, Westfal
  • orifice plates, baffled channel mixers, weirs and flumes
  • stirred tank flash mixers
  • effect of additive physical properties (viscosity and density) on blending performance
    comparative mixer efficiency
  • energy consumption and time required to achieve specified mixture quality (CoV)
  • application and cost saving examples

This webinar will benefit anyone involved in potable treatment, and by the end, you'll know how to at least specify mixing for potable treatment.

Speaker

Mick Dawson, BHR Group

Mick heads up the BHR consulting team and is a chemical engineer with more than 30 years managerial, technical and commercial experience. Mick managed the BHR Water and Wastewater Mixing (WWM) research consortium which pioneered the application of chemical engineering mixing research principles to specifically water industry applications. He has managed and worked on consultancy projects and audits involving all aspects of mixing across water, wastewater and sludge processing.

Mick regularly presents seminars and webinars on mixing in the water industry and is author of Mixing in Water and Wastewater Treatment chapter in ‘Advances in Industrial Mixing: A Companion to the Handbook of Industrial Mixing’ (2015).
