As a share of British electricity generation, renewable rnergy from wind and solar technologies, reached record levels in the past year. The on-and-off nature of renewable energy suggests that to avoid potential blackouts and unwelcome surges, a structure is required which can fully integrate those supplies into the national electricity grid. That means devising and building a serious storage capacity device for energy.

It is hoped that the Faraday Challenge (£246m in research funding on a four-year energy storage strategy focusing on battery innovation.) will break down barriers to new battery technologies and introduce new business models. The Faraday Challenge fund is tentatively aimed at two niches for the UK market, automotive batteries and domestic storage. These are both sectors where lithium-ion batteries have proven to be good, albeit expensive, but other options may be more promising or cheaper.

Our presentation aims to look at research in this sector in more detail.
