Overview

Air pollution is estimated to be a causative factor in the deaths of 28 to 36 thousand people per year in the UK and morbidity from diseases such as asthma. There is increased susceptibility for the young, old and those with pre-existing disease. While traffic and in particular diesel engine traffic is often blamed as the major polluter there are in fact multiple sources with residences, farming and industry all contributing. Some air pollution does not arise from combustion, but rather from friction, in particular brake and tyre sources and some from natural sources. Reducing air pollution therefore requires a collaborative effort that will include behaviour change, engineering solutions and regulatory action. In this short webinar we will look at some of the major outdoor air pollutants, their effects and briefly solutions to reduce production and exposure.

Prof. Timothy Gant, King's College London and Public Health England

Timothy Gant is Head of the Department of Toxicology in the Centre for Radiation, Chemicals and Environmental Hazards; Public Health England; and Visiting Professor at King’s College London. He graduated from the School of Pharmacy, University of London 1985 and gained a PhD from the University of London in 1988. He joined the National Cancer Institute Bethesda Maryland, USA in 1988 and stayed until 1993 leaving for a position in the Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit. In Sept 2011 left the Medical Research Council to join Public Health England. He additionally joined King’s College London in the Department of Analytical and Environmental Sciences. He has, and continues to serve on many scientific committees nationally and internationally.

A one-hour online session: 40 minutes' presentation + 20 minutes' Q&A.
Duration (for CPD recording purposes): up to one hour.
