Responsible Production

Electrolytic hydrogen project

As the world moves to a low carbon future, hydrogen has been widely considered as an energy vector to support this. In 2020, most hydrogen was produced from fossil fuels which still results in direct carbon emissions. An alternative production method is water electrolysis; a direct process using electricity.

This project, developed by IChemE’s Energy Community of Practice, aims to produce a critical analysis of the current state of the art technologies used in the production, supply and use of electrolytic hydrogen. This will consider the merits and challenges of different technologies as well as the gaps in knowledge and capability.

The work will deliver an evidence-based position on the technical work programme required to develop the use of electrolytic hydrogen in support of an international net zero economy.
