Process Safety is at the heart of what we do and IChemE is pleased to announce that in November 2016, the globally recognised process safety conference, Hazards Australasia will be held for the third time.

Process Safety, adding value not cost

Since the inaugural Hazards Australasia in 2013, we have seen the price of oil halve and the price of iron ore reduce by two thirds. These two decreases have led to significant financial pressure being placed on companies as they work to remain profitable in a commodity driven market. This pressure is causing companies to reduce expenditure and staffing levels, however it is vital that any cuts are well thought through. Reducing maintenance can seem like a great way to reduce current expenses, but this can lead to longer term safety issues. History is littered with facilities that reduced maintenance to unsustainable levels and subsequently suffered major incidents.

We need to change our thinking about the cost of process safety. Good process safety management results in well maintained and reliable equipment. When equipment is reliable it is operating and not suffering breakdowns. This is at the heart of reducing operating costs. Good process safety adds value, not cost to your business.

Challenging businesses is also the loss of knowledge and experience through downsizing to adjust to market price and the retiring baby boomer generation. This is leaving our industries vulnerable and we must become better at retaining the knowledge and competence to continue to operate safely.

IChemE recognises that leadership across knowledge and competence, engineering and design, systems and procedures, assurance, human factors and culture are fundamental to managing process safety. You will see these topics reflected across all the themes of the conference.

Join us for a world class process safety event, to learn how to add value to your business, not cost.
