Hazard identification requires a systematic and methodical approach to ensure all risks are recognised, prioritised and managed.
This course provides the skills and knowledge to prevent and protect against the effects of process safety incidents. It introduces the most important hazard identification techniques, their advantages and disadvantages, and when to apply them
Delivered using a variety of learning methods, the course features workshops, practical exercises, case studies and video.
By the end of this course, you will understand:
- the principles of key hazard identification techniques such as inherent safety study, HAZID, HAZOP and FMECA
- how to select approrpriate techniques for different situations, scenarios and stages in the project lifecycle
- the advantages and limitations of each technique
- when and how to use risk assessment as part of hazard identification, including LOPA

Suitable for anyone responsible for the design, commissioning, decommissioning, construction, installation and modification of plant. It will also benefit plant/process operators, including maintenance functions, process safety engineers and loss prevention specialists.

Phil Eames, FIChemE, Professional Process Safety Engineer, consultant
Phil graduated in chemical engineering from Leeds University in 1982 and worked in Procter & Gamble’s European R&D Division as a process development engineer before joining the Seal Sands Chemical Company in 1987 and then ICI Acrylics at Billingham in 1988.
Phil worked initially as a process engineer but then moved into plant management and eventually into the role of site Safety Health & Environmental Manager in 1993. From there he became ICI Acrylics’ European SHE Manager in 1996 and then Global SHE Manager in 1998, a position he held for 10 years, during which time the company changed ownership and became Lucite International.
Phil joined ABB Consulting in 2008 and is involved in process safety management consulting including work across most sectors of the process industries including oil and gas, (petro) chemicals, pharmaceuticals and power generation. Phil now works as an independent freelance process safety consultant.
Phil has extensive experience in process safety management. This includes: the development, application and auditing of PSM systems in the UK, Europe, South Africa, Asia and US the provision of advice on process safety management, assurance and reporting on process safety performance at board level process hazard analysis including extensive experience as a HAZID, HAZOP and LOPA leader the investigation of a major incidents including fires, toxic exposures and environmental releases.
