IChemE supports Science Media Centre
IChemE has pledged to continue supporting the UK Science Media Centre in 2011.
The SMC is based in London and is often the first calling point for journalists seeking expert comment or background information on science and engineering matters in the news.
The centre was opened in 2002 and is funded by donations from industry, academia, societies and private donors. In 2005 an Australian Science Media Centre opened to provide a similar role to Australia based media.
IChemE communications manager Matt Stalker says that IChemE and chemical engineers must take the time to respond when science and engineering matters are on the news agenda: “The SMC has done a good job, helping journalists since its inception. We're keen to continue supporting the SMC and working to raise the profile of chemical engineering and IChemE.
“We recently appointed our first Australia based press officer and establishing a similar relationship with the Australian SMC is something we are also keen to look into," says Stalker.
The UK SMC also hosts press briefings on key themes and new research. Last week it hosted the launch of the new Engineering the Future report, ‘Infrastructure, Engineering and Climate Change Adaptation: Ensuring services in an uncertain future’.

About chemical engineers
Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, maths and economics to the process of turning raw materials into everyday products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
About IChemE
