Dr Paul Chen is a professor in the environmental engineering at National University of Singapore. He has worked in the field of chemical engineering for above 30 years, focusing on R&D in the areas of membrane, adsorption, heavy metals, oily water treatment, resource and energy recovery, exhaust gas treatment and new contaminants (eg microplastics).

He has authored over 120 research articles, most of which are published in several prestigious journals in the research areas, such as Chemical Society reviews, EST, JMS and water research, with H-index of 49 and citation of above10,000.

He has authored one book published by the CRC and has six edited books by the CRC or Springer. He has six patents, three of which are commercialised. He has served as an expert for the review of research proposals for 20 funding agencies (eg NSF, NSFC, NRF, and RGC). He is in the editorial boards of 20 journals and publishers, including JCIS, Taylor and Francis Group, Springer, and Elsevier.

He has worked as a technical consultant for various companies, including APL, PUB, JTC, NRF, DNV GL, and PSB TUV. He obtained his PhD from Georgia Tech in 1997. He is a Chartered engineer, a Chartered scientist, a Chartered chemical engineer, and a Chartered marine engineer. He is elected as a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), International Water Association (FIWA), Institution of Chemical Engineers (FIChemE), Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET) and Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (FIMarEST).
