This summer has been punctuated with milestones and career achievements for IChemE.

In the July/August issue of TCE we celebrate the 20th anniversary of IChemE in Malaysia with several features charting the evolution of the region - with Petronas discussing sustainability in industry, and educators from the University of Nottingham Malaysia and Heriot-Watt Malaysia on the needs of today’s graduates.

Also in this issue, we welcome the new IChemE President Ollie Folayan, who has hit the ground running with his presidency, engaging with fellows and student members alike at IChemE’s most recent events, which includes this year’s anticipated YEAIS. We also say goodbye to Bev Garratt, who served as secretary to the chief executive of IChemE for almost 50 years! Bev tells us how the institution has changed over the decades and what she enjoyed most about the job.

On the topic of safety, HAZOP, LOPA and SIL trainer Nigel Bowker takes a deep-dive into dust explosions in the aftermath of the explosion at Glencore’s Kazzinc plant in Kazakhstan. More internally, IChemE Fellow Chris Hamlin gets candid about mental health and how we can build more safeguards for chemical engineers.

Hydrogen is a constant point of discussion for TCE, and in the lead up to the Hydrogen Innovation and Technology Conference in October, IChemE’s commercial marketing executive Ruth Powell talks to chair of the Oil, Gas and Energy Transition SIG Steve Flynn about hydrogen’s place in the low-carbon conversation.
