Sheffield to host national chemical engineering research event

12th November 2014

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) will be partnering up with the Chemical and Biological Engineering department at the University of Sheffield to co-host the UK’s only national chemical engineering research event – ChemEngDayUK 2015.

Hosted at Sheffield’s city hall from 8 – 9 April 2015, the ChemEngDayUK 2015 conference will feature invited speakers and research poster presentations under the following broad topics and themes:

  • food and water security
  • meeting sustainable energy demands
  • materials innovation
  • biological engineering
  • increasing manufacturing value
  • education, training and outreach

IChemE director of policy, Andy Furlong, said: “Chemical engineering matters and research plays a crucial role. IChemE is pleased to be working with one of the UK’s leading departments to host ChemEngDayUK 2015 in Sheffield.

“Promoting the chemical engineering research agenda is an important part of IChemE’s work. There are some exciting things happening, both in the academic space and in industry. Knowledge exchange is vital and ChemEngDayUK 2015 will facilitate this by providing a showcase for the latest research activity in chemical engineering departments throughout the UK.”

Each research theme will have a lead in the form of a senior chemical engineer within that field. So far, three theme leads have been announced: John Bøgild Hansen, senior scientist at Haldor Topsøe, will lead on meeting sustainable energy demands; Amanda Weiss, head of DSP operations R & D at Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, will lead on biological engineering; and Dr. Jarka Glassey, reader in chemical engineering education at Newcastle University will lead on education, training and outreach.

Invited speakers have also been announced within these three categories: professor Paul Williams from the University of Leeds for meeting sustainable energy demands; professor Kenneth Reardon from Colorado State University for biological engineering; and Dr. Martin Pitt from the University of Sheffield for education, training and outreach.

ChemEngDayUK is held annually and has previously been hosted by IChemE in partnership with Imperial College London in 2013, and the University of Manchester in 2014.

The call for abstracts is now open with the submission deadline on 1 December 2014.
