IChemE launches new UK local member group

20th June 2011

The Portsmouth and Southampton region in the UK now has its very own regional member group.

In a meeting on 15 June 2011, 18 chemical engineers from the local area came together to vote on a new committee. The new chair is Sudhaker Achwal, while Peter Laithwaite was voted in as the new vice chair. The treasurer’s position will be shared by Steve Queen and Tayo Adeyanju. A secretary, social secretary, webmaster, mentor and school liaison officer were also appointed.

“There were quite a few engineers interested in getting the group running again, there is a definite need around here and we hope we can cater for that,” said Achwal, adding: “We have 20 at the moment and I hope that within a year it will double.

The committee hopes to work with local schools and businesses to promote IChemE and the chemical engineering profession. The group will prove a network for local chemical engineers, support those working towards chartership and organise site visits and technical talks. The first committee meeting will be in around six week’s time.
