Become a mentor

There are many benefits of mentoring – not just for the mentee, but also for the mentor. By supporting the development of more inexperienced chemical engineers, you’re not only helping to advance the profession, but also giving yourself the opportunity to reflect and enhance your own professional development while improving your people management skills.

IChemE mentors are Chartered Members or Fellows assisting others, usually towards their Chartered application, which may include:

  • supporting the mentee through the Individual Case Procedure (if required)
  • providing support to the mentee as they plan their Initial Professional Development (IPD)
  • providing advice to the mentee as they prepare their Competence and Commitment (C&C) Report
  • acting a referee for their application for Chartered Member (MIChemE) and Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

How to register as a mentor

If your company has an Accredited Company Training Scheme (ACTS), speak to your ACTS manager about registering as an ACTS mentor to help trainees through the scheme.

Alternatively, if you are a Chartered Member or Fellow of IChemE and would like to help other members through their application for Chartered membership, contact mentoring@icheme.org for more information and to register.

Guidance and support

Download our Mentoring Guidelines document which offers advice for both mentors and mentees. You can also work with your mentee/s to use our Framework for Effective Mentoring to record their professional experience against each section of the Competence and Commitment (C&C) Report when preparing their Chartered Member application.
