What if becoming a better project delivery professional wasn't about working longer hours, collecting more certifications, or constantly operating under pressure?

Inspired by both real-world project experience and the science of human performance, this interactive workshop explores the surprising parallels between elite athletic training and successful project delivery. Using sports science equipment and a live demonstration, we'll discover why top athletes spend most of their training at a comfortable, conversational effort known as Zone 2 and consider whether the same principle applies to projects.

Together, we'll challenge common assumptions about performance, stress, and success, exploring how trust, relationships, and the quality of everyday conversations often have a greater impact on project outcomes than working harder alone. Whether you're preparing for your first project role or developing as a future leader, this thought provoking session will offer a fresh perspective on sustainable high performance and reveal why Emotional Intelligence may be the foundation upon which project success is built.

Speaker

Stephen Mullen, Senior Lecturer in Engineering, University of Cumbria

Stephen is a Chartered Scientist and Management professional working as a Senior Lecturer in Project Management with the University of Cumbria where he overseas delivery of the UK’s largest Association of Project Management accredited Higher Education programmes. He has several decades experience delivering projects across High-Hazard Industry and Humanitarian sectors and performed Doctoral research into the impact of Emotional Intelligence on project success.
