The IChemE Safety Centre presents The Danger Zone.

We work in industries where danger is well understood - high pressures, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Yet the danger explored in this presentation is not physical. It is cognitive. It is cultural.

It exists in the gap between what we believe we have assured and what we have actually understood.

That gap is the Danger Zone.

For the last 38 years, Howard has worked on process plants all over the world, from downstream petrochemicals and refining through midstream to upstream onshore and offshore, ranging from technician roles to executive consultancy.

Howard has been involved in the evolution of functional safety from the early days of the safety case approach in the UK, the combination of reliability science with process safety, the development of IEC61508 and the overall evolution and spread of functional safety around the world.

Howard is known for his book ‘Simplicity from Complexity’ and for providing clarity where others struggle.
