Fluid Mixing Processes
IChemE FMPSIG Student Research Event 2026
30th April 2026
The IChemE Fluid Mixing Processes Special Interest Group Students Event was held at the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham on 23rd April. Six students from the Universities of Birmingham, Manchester and University College London gave excellent talks covering a wide range of mixing applications including high throughput screening, bioreactors and the manufacture of home and personal care products. The diversity of the talks was particularly notable in reflecting the health of the area and the ubiquity of mixing challenges in processing and manufacture. Poster presentations were also given by students from the Universities of Sheffield and Birmingham.
The winner of the student’s competition was Laia Miranda from UCL who gave a talk on the “Engineering constraints on transient transfection scale-up across stirred-tank and rocking bioreactor platforms”. She receives a cash prize, sponsored by Syngenta, to attend the Mixing 18 conference in Limerick, Ireland.
We are grateful to the input of academics and industrialists who attended the event including representatives from the Universities of Manchester, UCL and Birmingham; Unilever, Syngenta and Framatome Ltd.
