This presentation will introduce the concept of Industrial Symbiosis and assess its relevance for pharmaceutical companies. After defining a common ground, we’d like to reflect on ways to embrace and enhance symbiosis by pharmaceutical companies. Pharmaceutical companies have been found in a great number of symbiosis agreements, according to several reviews. This seems to highlight the potential for optimization that is comprised within pharmaceutical inputs and outputs. Finally, the presentation will reflect on NNE role as a facilitator for three symbioses in Denmark, including the well-known Kalundborg Symbiosis, and some of the key factors to enable the transition towards a more sustainable production.

Thais Andrés Jiménez, LCS Consultant, NNE A/S

Thais previously worked at the Corporate Environmental Strategy department at Novo Nordisk with focus on reducing environmental impact of raw materials for production of API. In addition, Thais designed a generic model of the Kalundborg Symbiosis network based on metabolic analysis and has a good knowledge of all flows exchanged in the network and a good network of contacts in the Board.

Jacob Vester, Senior Consultant, Sustainability, NNE A/S

Jacob is senior sustainability consultant and Subject Matter Expert (Sustainability) in NNE where he advises customers on sustainability opportunities on both practical and strategic levels. Jacob has a vast experience developing symbiosis projects and taking possible symbiosis opportunities into account when designing solutions in existing facilities but also on new facilities where selection of optimal technology is often affected by site conditions, possible collaborations, and future exchange of raw materials with others. Jacob have further been part of the initiation of the industrial Hillerød Symbiosis.
