Overview

Case studies offer valuable learnings and insights. This workshop, hosted by the Pharma, Particle Technology, and Education Special Interest Groups, is a unique opportunity for academics, industrialists, and students to explore emerging technologies through compelling case studies. This workshop aims to tailor teaching and learning materials for meeting evolving industrial needs by applying core chemical engineering principles.

The morning session focuses on:

  • industrial case studies spanning batch and hygienic process development and manufacturing
  • a tour of the University of Sheffield’s Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant, showcasing real-world applications of chemical engineering and process control.

In the afternoon, workshop attendees will collaborate to create case studies based on industrial practice, incorporating:

  • core chemical engineering concepts (eg solid flows, process safety, and advanced process control) linked to real-world applications
  • technology-driven trends, including sustainable production and digitalisation
  • societal issues and ethical issues faced in practice
  • relevant soft skills, including multidisciplinary working.

The workshop will lead to tangible outcomes in the form of coherent case study concepts that can enrich students’ learning while establishing further needs, trends and gaps in skills and knowledge needed to succeed in an industrial environment.
