Nicklin Medal

Recognising outstanding early-career chemical engineering researchers

This medal is named after Don Nicklin, the long-standing head of chemical engineering at Queensland University, Australia and a successful consultant known for supporting up and coming researchers. The Nicklin Medal is an early careers award and was introduced in 2014 to recognise talented chemical engineering researchers.

The medal aims to foster a strong culture of sustainable practice among future chemical engineers. It accepts nominations from both academia and industry and is open to eligible early career chemical engineers.

Nominees must, at the time of the awards nomination deadline, must be within the first 15 years of their career (career breaks excluded) and should have produced international quality research outputs.

Any member can make a nomination for this medal. Nominations will be considered by IChemE’s Medals and Prizes Committee, who will confirm the winner.

Judging criteria

Criteria the Nicklin Medal will be judged against are:

1. ability to provide scientific and engineering advances
2. recognises excellence in integrating sustainable development principles into chemical engineering design projects, including the rigorous use of sustainability principles and metrics and clear evidence of the overall sustainability of the proposed design
3. originality of research
4. scope/significance - should demonstrate potential in terms of application of methods and tools to solving challenging problems
5. impact and alignment of research with progress toward a net-zero economy or the UN SDGs
6. the publications, citations, patents, or other indicators of esteem of the research.

To make a nomination for the Nicklin Medal, open the online nomination form and complete the information requested, paying attention to the criteria the medal will be judged against.

• additional documents submitted outside the information provided in the nomination form will not be considered by the judges (unless specified otherwise)
• we do not accept self-nominations
• we do not accept nominations for sitting members of the Board of Trustees
• unless indicated otherwise, medals/prizes are generally awarded to individuals — a single medal shall be presented in all cases.
