The UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals

Strategy 28+ sets out IChemE’s desire to work together to make an impact and contribute positively to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But which SDGs should IChemE focus on?

The Learned Society Committee (LSC) considered which of the 17 SDGs rely the most on the contributions of chemical engineers, and conversely, which challenges chemical engineers are working on that will contribute to meeting the SDGs.

The LSC identified eight SDGs where chemical engineers play a role, and grouped them into seven Priority Topics. The first four are directly aligned with the eight chosen SDGs, while the remaining three represent fundamentals and cross cutting themes, without which, the SDGs cannot be achieved.

By working to improve members’ knowledge and driving research and development in these areas, IChemE will be recognised as a trusted, vibrant professional body that uses member knowledge and expertise to materially impact the major challenges facing society.
