SOMCHE 2022: Empowering and Building Resilience in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

Over the two days of August 8-9, 2022, the 33rd Symposium of Malaysian Chemical Engineers (SOMChE 2022 was successful to attract more than 100 researchers, academic and industry experts to join the two-day event. The theme of SOMCHE 2022 was “Empowering and Building Resilience in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals”. Academic and industry experts covered wide range of topics relevant to cutting-edge research, new technologies, and emerging growth areas in chemical engineering. This symposium was jointly organised by Heriot-Watt University Malaysia with Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), Malaysia, with support from the Academic Research on Palm Oil Sustainability (ARPOS) Network and IChemE's Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG).  Meanwhile, the event was mainly led and executed under the guidance of Chairman Prof. Ir. Denny K. S. Ng and Deputy Chairman Dr. Wong Voon Loong.

The two-day conference comprised 45 scientific committee and advisory board members, 1 plenary session, 6 keynote speeches, and 2 panel discussions. The symposium featured 7 renowned speakers including Prof. Datuk Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Bin Ismail; Prof Dato Abdul Wahab Mohammad from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM); Prof. Dr. Kathleen B. Aviso from De La Salle University; Prof. Ir. Dr. Abdul Aziz Bin Abdul Raman from University of Malaya (UM); Prof. Dr. Mohamed Kheireddine Aroua from Sunway University Malaysia; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nishanth Chemmangattuvalappil from The University of Nottingham Malaysia; Assoc. Prof. Dr Yamuna Munusamy from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman; and, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wee-Jun Ong from Xiamen University Malaysia.

The event also highlighted 2 panel discussions - “Sustainability in Today’s Palm Oil” supported by POPSIG and “Can We Achieve Carbon Neutral by 2050?”. The first panel consists of Prof. Ir. Dr. Dominic Foo Chwan Yee from The University of Nottingham Malaysia; Dr. Steven Lim from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman; Dr. Carmen Goh Kar Mun from Eureka Synergy Sdn Bhd; Ir. Prasath Ramani (moderator) and Ir. Dr. Calvin Chok from KL-Kepong Oleomas Sdn. Bhd. The second panel consists of Prof. Ir. Dr. Denny Ng Kok Sum (moderator) from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia; Prof. Dr. Agamutu Pariatamby from Sunway University Malaysia; Richard James Brice from IChemE Sustainability Hub; Ir. Dr. Suzana Yusup from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Research Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia; Kasturi Nathan from KPMG, Malaysia; and Dr. Norfaizah Ab Manan from Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS).

The organising committee of SOMChE 2022 also expressed the deepest gratitude to JJ-Lurgi Engineering Sdn Bhd and Novozymes Malaysia Sdn Bhd for their steadfast support and generosity in sponsoring the four (4) best paper awards (Water, Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Processes, and Sustainable Materials) with monetary prizes and two (2) best presentation awards with monetary prizes.
