Overview

Data science is a growing and exciting industry, showing both significant progress, and making many promises. Many companies and consultants are recommending that we should be following the likes of Netflix and Google or be left behind. However, chemical engineering companies are not software companies, and making a movie recommendation is not the same thing as making a plant set point recommendation. This talk will explore the challenges and expectations of data science, specific to chemical engineering, and what you need to consider when embarking in this space.

Speaker

Irina Boiarkina, Data Scientist, Fonterra

Irina is a chemical engineer working as a data scientist for Fonterra, a world leading dairy exporter. Prior to this she worked as a lecturer at the University of Auckland, and completed her post-doc on a joint project between the University of Auckland and Fonterra investigating the effect of spray dryer operation on milk powder quality.
