Overview

The Sargent Medal for 2021 is awarded to Professor Rafiqul Gani.

Professor Gani is an internationally recognised leader in process systems engineering and sustainability. He has been a pioneer in chemical product design and process synthesis, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the chemical industry. His seminal contributions in research and education, together with long track record of publication, collaboration, and leadership, have had a major impact in chemical engineering at large.

Professor Rafiqul Gani

Professor Rafiqul Gani completed his BSc in Chemical Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1975. During the period 1976—1980, his studies continued at Imperial College in London, where he obtained MSc, DIC and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering.

Between 1980—1985, he worked at PLAPIQUI in Argentina as a Senior Researcher and until 1986, he was also a Visiting Researcher at the Technical University of Denmark.

Joining the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark in 1986, as Assistant Professor, where in 2000, he was appointed a professor in Systems Design. 

Professor Gani is co-founder and CEO of the company “PSE for SPEED” providing engineering solutions to industrial clients.

During his acclaimed career Professor Gani has received Honorary Doctorate Degrees from University Politechnica Bucharest, University of Pannonia, and Babes-Bolyai University, and is a member of the Danish Academy of Science, a Fellow of AIChE, and a Fellow of IChemE.

The IChemE judging panel congratulated Professor Gani and announced “Professor Gani is an internationally recognized leader in process systems engineering (PSE) and sustainability.  He has been a pioneer in chemical product design and process synthesis, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the chemical industry. His seminal contributions in research and education, together with long track record of publication, collaboration, and leadership, have had a major impact in chemical engineering at large.”
