Overview

Energy Efficiency Design (EED) is a methodology developed across industry in Ireland over the last 15 years. The philosophy at the core is to benchmark the design, from an energy standpoint, and to try and reduce this in a practicable and affordable way. An EED study is analogous to a HAZOP study ie a methodical, logical process with clearly defined steps and outcomes. This talk will outline the benefits of integrating this type of study into the design process.

Aoife Hamill, Process Engineering Director, FDT Consulting

Aoife, a chemical engineer, graduated from University College Dublin in 2005. Since 2017, she has been the Process Engineering Director at FDT Consulting Engineer and Project Managers where she works on a variety of process and utilities projects but energy efficiency in the pharmaceutical industry is a core focus.

Aoife holds an MSc in Renewable Energy and Energy Management and an IBD Distilling Diploma. She published a research project, funded by the Irish EPA, in 2015 which investigated the best practice treatment of distillery co-products, focusing on environmental impact and efficiency. Since September 2020, Aoife has been the secretary of the IChemE All Ireland Members Group and is also a member of the Pharma Special Interest Group committee.

Vincent Lane, Sustainability and Energy Projects Director, FDT Consulting

Vincent graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Cape Town in 2006. He subsequently worked in the field of process engineering, specifically within the petroleum, pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries. In 2009, he enrolled in a master’s degree in sustainable energy at University of Cape Town after which he worked as an energy auditor and project manager/engineer on projects involving energy efficiency and solar photovoltaics, mainly for industrial clients.

In 2015, he moved to Ireland, and completed the ESOS lead assessor course. His role in FDT, involves assisting clients with energy management, energy efficient design studies ie IS 399, project management and utilities design.
