Eleven IChemE members honoured as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering

IChemE is delighted to congratulate eleven of its members who have today been elected as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This prestigious recognition celebrates their outstanding contributions to chemical engineering and their transformative impact on industry, research, and society.

The new Fellows are:

• Dr Chan Boodhai, former Chief Industry Officer, Sustainable Markets Initiative/BP
• Dr Gio Cristofoli, Regional President, Caspian Central Asia and Türkiye, bp
• Professor Peter Cummings, Bicentennial Professor, Heriot-Watt University
• Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer, Deputy Principal for Global Sustainability and Robert Buchan Chair in Sustainable Energy Engineering, Heriot-Watt University
• Professor Paul Stephen Fennell, Professor of Clean Energy, Imperial College London
• Nigel Hirst, Past President of IChemE and Chair, Haden Freeman Ltd
• Professor Clemens Kaminski OBE, Professor of Chemical Physics and Head of Department, Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Cambridge
• Professor Jhuma Sadhukhan, Co-Director of Global Center for Sustainable Bioproducts, University of Surrey
• Professor Meihong Wang, Professor of Process and Energy Systems Engineering, University of Sheffield

The new Fellows have each demonstrated exceptional leadership and innovation in their fields, ranging from sustainable bioproducts to process and energy systems, to pioneering research and academia. The election of these Fellows reflects not only outstanding personal achievement but also the critical role that chemical engineers play in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
