IChemE calls for volunteers to engage with new school initiative

10th June 2024

IChemE has today announced its participation in a new collaboration to educate primary school children on the importance of considering sustainable solutions that help protect the planet.

The newest initiative in the Institution’s DiscoverChemEng campaign will see IChemE work with The3Engineers, a trio of passionate professionals with over 30 years of engineering and systems thinking experience.

To support the project, IChemE is now asking for volunteers to head into schools to inspire children aged 4–5 to take small, positive, and environmentally focused actions with the support of The3Engineers’ engaging storybooks. These fun rhyming stories feature a character named Scout, a curious and adventurous girl, who discovers problems such as plastic-strewn beaches and endangered animals and comes up with sustainable approaches to solve them.

Jo Cox, Head of Young People’s & Student Engagement, IChemE, said: “It is never too early to start engaging children with discussions about sustainability and solutions for the planet; these books from The3Engineers are hugely accessible – they provide a fantastic springboard for members to talk about their roles and responsibilities in the chemical engineering industry.”

IChemE members who are interested in participating in this scheme can learn more about this volunteering opportunity by reading the role description and contacting discoverchemeng@icheme.org for further information.

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.

IChemE

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 30,000 members in more than 100 countries.

We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
