Popular IChemE Sustainability Hub goes from strength to strength

IChemE has announced it will continue offering Sustainability Hub content to members free of charge until the end of 2025. Launched in February 2022, the Sustainability Hub is now one of the most-visited sections of the IChemE website.
The Hub was created following a donation from former IChemE President Ian Shott, and with initial donor funding set to expire at the end of this year, the Institution has opted to continue funding as part of its existing day-to-day work focusing on engineering a more sustainable world.
The Sustainability Hub delivers a valuable knowledge resource for IChemE members and the wider community, focusing primarily on four of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals where chemical engineers play a key role:
- SDG 3: Good health and well-being
- SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation
- SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy
- SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production
Five on-demand training courses have been made available free-of-charge to members and Matt Stalker, IChemE Associate Director, explained that the introduction of this new resource has been greatly valued by members, with around 5000 member registrations for the courses since the Hub’s launch. Courses currently available free to members are:
- An Introduction to Sustainability
- Ethical Decision-Making for Chemical Engineers
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for Chemical Engineers
- The Human Water Cycle: Water and Wastewater Treatment and Reuse
- The Circular Economy for Chemical Engineers
Courses coming soon include:
- Sustainable Process Integration for Cleaner Process Design
- Role and Responsibility of Chemical Engineers in Achieving Net Zero
- Sanitation and Wastewater Reuse in Developing Regions
More than 40 Sustainability Success Stories and In Focus articles have been published on the Sustainability Hub, with all content selected and peer reviewed by a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of IChemE members, chaired by IChemE Fellow Dr Trish Melton.
Dr Melton said: “The Sustainability Hub has been a great success and I’m very happy that IChemE has opted to continue supporting it. We recognise the importance of helping chemical engineers, and the wider professional engineering community, gain the required knowledge to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our planet. We’ve already helped IChemE members from all over the world develop their sustainability knowledge and skills. Now we can look forward to helping them further and extending our reach in the coming years, and the IChemE Sustainability Hub can help be part of that.”
Funding for the Hub will be reviewed in mid-2025, ensuring that IChemE members can continue to access this important resource free of charge for a further two years.
