IChemE employer partners examine skills reform, research alignment and the future of the profession

9th December 2025

IChemE brought together its employer partners, academic partners and education collaborators for a Partner Networking Lunch on 20 November in Manchester.

The event was held to examine the implications of the Post-16 Education and Skills reforms and the increasingly diverse routes into chemical and process engineering. The session focused on how employers, universities, FE providers and UTCs can work more closely to strengthen entry pathways, enhance practical experience, and ensure programmes prepare learners for the evolving needs of industry.

Discussions explored shared challenges around skills development, research alignment and the future capabilities the profession will require, as well as the role of early engagement and applied learning in supporting learner progression. Particular emphasis was placed on improving clarity across the different routes into the profession, strengthening collaboration between institutions, and ensuring research and innovation are closely connected to industrial priorities.
