At IChemE, the grade of Fellow is our most prestigious level of professional membership. It represents peer-reviewed recognition of seniority, leadership, and significant contribution to the field of chemical engineering.

For Employer Partners, supporting senior engineers to achieve Fellowship not only enhances individual career recognition but also showcases your organisation’s commitment to professional excellence and leadership development.

We are pleased to highlight the new decoupled Fellowship route, which no longer requires applicants to hold Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. This opens the door to a wider pool of senior professionals, those who hold or have held influential roles and made a substantial contribution to chemical or process engineering.

The process is accessible and designed to reflect real-world experience. Applications are submitted online, with a tailored CV, a written reflection on professional contributions, and support from two referees. Candidates can choose from a range of themes, such as strategic leadership, innovation, enterprise, or academic achievements, to demonstrate their impact.

Many senior engineers are already operating at Fellowship level. Encouraging them to apply provides them with deserved recognition and sends a clear message about your organisation’s values.

The requirement to demonstrate technical depth on long-forgotten work from some 30 years ago, was a barrier to fulfil my ambition to be chartered earlier. It felt uncomfortable to promote IChemE membership with engineers in Shell, without having passed such assessment myself. The new IChemE Fellowship Process allowed me to demonstrate competence on basis of more recent professional achievements.
