Functional seals are the critical engineering components for preventing leakage and emissions. Leakage/emissions from engineering processes result in loss of product/revenue, as well as contributing to environmental pollution and safety hazards.

This talk will give a general overview on typical types of static and dynamic seals, the fluid exposure of a typical seal both in operation and in its life time, thereby explaining the operational parameters required for general seal specifications. It is important that seal design, maintenance and replacement take into account their effects on overall process performance, potential leakage of liquids and/or gases, as well as the long term reliability of seals and processes.

A selection of industrial case studies will be given which illustrate how seals may function or fail.

Guest speaker

Dr. Emily Ho -  has over 20 years' experience leading process and equipment, research and development projects from concept, feasibility study, scaleup, plant design, installation to commissioning. She wrote the Research Report RR485 for the Health and Safety Executive, UK (HSE) to advise the oil and gas industry in the use of elastomeric seals for rapid gas decompression applications in high-pressure service.
