The Mangawhai Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is undergoing a significant upgrade to accommodate growing demand and future-proof wastewater management for the Mangawhai region in Northland. This upgrade will not only expand the plant’s capacity but also ensure compliance with environmental standards while supporting the town’s rapid population growth and development. The total cost of the upgrade is approximately NZ$75 million, funded by Kaipara District Council.

Once upgraded, the Mangawhai WWTP will have the capacity to handle wastewater from about 8,000 residential properties, accounting for expected growth within the next several decades. The expanded facility will integrate modern treatment technologies that improve efficiency and reduce environmental impacts, particularly on sensitive ecosystems like the Mangawhai Harbour area. The upgrade includes enhancements such as larger treatment tanks, improved aeration systems, advanced filtration processes, inDesnse system and piping infrastructure capable of serving a larger footprint.
