Overview

This presentation outlines the intrinsic role chemical engineers play in sustainability, connecting sustainability to the UN's 17 SDGs, and showing how chemical engineering supports goals like zero hunger, clean water, renewable energy, and climate action.

Despite global and regional challenges in meeting SDG targets by 2030, chemical engineers drive solutions through innovation, collaboration, and advocacy. The sharing will provide examples of how chemical engineers can integrate sustainability into their daily work. It emphasises the role of chemical engineers as key drivers in the shift toward more responsible resource use, ensuring that the planet’s resources are preserved for future generations.

Speaker

Terence Tan, Director, Carbon Management, UN Global Compact Network Singapore

Terence is the Director, Carbon Management, at UN Global Compact Network Singapore (UNGCNS). In this role, he oversees operational and strategic decarbonisation activities for CPLC (Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition) Singapore, which is the decarbonisation arm of GCNS.

Terence has over 30 years of industry experience with Shell Oil, in which he held leadership positions in process technology, operations and HSE (health, safety and the environment). He is a believer in “servant leadership”, leading by personal example based on his core values of Kindness, Fairness, and Integrity towards all.

As part of his responsibilities at UNGCNS, Terence has trained over 1,500 participants in various aspects of the environment and climate change. He has spoken or moderated at various local and global events such as the NEEC (National Energy Efficiency Conference) and COP28. He sits on the Singapore Standards Environment and Resources Standards Technical Committee, and also the Asia Carbon Institute’s International Vetting Committee. His particular areas of interest include the issues and challenges in the measurement and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the criticality of getting to net zero, carbon pricing, and the risks and opportunities impacting businesses.

Terence has a BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from the National University of Singapore, and is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of IChemE. He has attended various carbon accounting, sustainability and adult educator training, of which the Cambridge University’s Prince of Wales Business and Sustainability Program for Senior Executives in 2015 was a highlight.
