Overview

There are over 500 gasification plants with over 1,000 operating gasifiers around the world producing a total of over 200 MWth. Of these about half gasify coal, mostly in China – and these are the large units. But there are also about 200 smaller plants operating on biomass or waste, three quarters of which are located in Europe. Although the chemistry and thermodynamics of gasification are essentially the same for coal and biomass, the practical issues for a satisfactorily operating plant show some important differences, particularly feeding systems and tar issues in the syngas.

Presenter

Chris Higman, Independent Consultant

Chris Higman is an independent consultant specializing in gasification and other syngas technologies. Chris began his career in South Africa in 1966. He joined Lurgi in 1975 and remained associated with the company for nearly 30 years, mostly in the field of complete plants based on gasification. These included plants for the production of ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, power and synfuels.

He has authored many articles in the field. He is co-author, with Maarten van der Burgt, of the book “Gasification”. Chris received a Batchelor’s degree in Oxford and a Master’s at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
