This webinar will present firstly an overview of online learning in teams emphasizing how to design activities including the use of tools like Zoom, for meaningful collaborative experiences. This will be followed by two case studies showcasing the use of MS Teams in different learning contexts in chemical engineering. The first case study will present the use of MS Teams for the delivery of group projects (e.g. design project) while the second case study will demonstrate how to build up an interactive platform for a module (e.g. Chemical and Phase Equilibria) on MS Teams. Throughout the presenters will share experiences, tips and tools that can be used for positive collaborative learning experiences.


Esther Ventura-Medina, University of Strathclyde

Esther Ventura-Medina is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. She worked before at Monash University (2013-2015) and The University of Manchester (2005-2013) in Engineering Education roles. Throughout her career, Esther has been involved in a variety of projects with particular focus on professional skill development. She leads the SkIL research group that investigates aspects of Skills' development (Problem Solving, Teamwork and Decision Making) by looking at social interactions in different environments, focusing on educational and human factors in safety, to inform training and performance. She has years of expertise in delivering Problem-based learning both face-to-face and online.

Samantha Gooneratne, Teesside University

Samantha Gooneratne is the Principal Lecturer for Staffing & Resources (Engineering) at Teesside University (UK), and has served as the Course Leader for Undergraduate Chemical Engineering programmes for the past five years. She holds an MEng and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge (UK), and specialises in process simulation and reaction engineering. Sam is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE) and a Microsoft Certified Educator. She is also currently a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert. Her main pedagogic interests are in developing authentic assessment (focusing on group work), improving feedback literacy and using EdTech tools to enhance traditional higher education practices.

Daniel Beneroso Vallejo, University of Nottingham

Daniel Beneroso is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering and Deputy Head of Education and Student Experience at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nottingham (UK). Daniel has an MEng and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Malaga and Oviedo (Spain), respectively, and holds a Senior Fellowship recognition of the Higher Education Academy. He is interested in promoting a fresh system engineering perspective of education with a clear mission to catalyse and instil a change in engineering education key-drivers -such as global outlook and experiences, multidisciplinary curriculum development or responsible engineering education- through innovative and humanised learning experiences.
