Overview

When designing trays for distillation and absorption columns the two main criteria are jet-flood and downcomer choke flood. Various jet-flood correlations tend to give consistent answers whereas downcomer flood correlations do not. This makes downcomer sizing the most problematic for engineers. The presentation will look at downcomer sizing and optimisation in detail.

Speaker

Aadam F. Aryan, Technical Director, Distillation Equipment Company Ltd

Aadam has been employed in the mass transfer equipment industry ever since graduating in 1986 with a BSc (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from Aston University, Birmingham, UK. He started his career initially as a Process Development Manager with Mass Transfer International Ltd. Then as a Process Engineer with Eta Process Plant Ltd. Subsequently he was with Koch-Glitsch for approx. 10 years in various roles (Senior Process Engineer, Sales & Marketing Manager & finally Director of the Engineering Division). During his career he has successfully designed thousands of distillation and absorption columns. His current area of interest is tray efficiency and the development of a new tray which improves both the capacity and efficiency but will also have a low pressure drop.
