Webinar: What Does Sustainability Mean to Chemical Engineers?
  • Date From 24th July 2023
  • Date To 24th July 2023
  • Price Free of charge, open to all.
  • Location Online: 09:30 BST. Duration: 2 hours.

Overview

This innovative interactive webinar will consist of short introductions on the themes of sustainability. Breakout sessions will then be used to discuss key sustainability issues involved in production, use, recovery and recycling and the role of chemical engineers in these processes.

The output from this webinar will be used by the Sustainability SIG and the Sustainability Hub to inform future activity. Questions stimulated by the recent Technology Roadmap member consultation will be used to provide further input to the consultation.

Speakers

Dr David Gardner, Chair, Sustainability Special Interest Group

David is the current Chair of the Sustainability SIG. He has spent almost 40 years in industry and innovation developing innovative and sustainable solutions in process and chemical engineering. This has included activities with DEFRA and BEIS, advising on critical raw materials and supply chain risks, as Innovation Director of the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme and Technical Director of the Environmental Sustainability Knowledge Transfer Network.

David worked on the development of the process to produce 'hard' carbon for electrodes in car batteries from waste lignin at Stora Enso’s Innovation centre for Biomaterials in Stockholm. He has drawn on his experience of heating technologies, including microwave, radio-frequency, ohmic, induction, as well as electrochemical innovations to develop long-term sustainable processes across multiple sectors.

Dr Trish Melton, Chair, Technical Advisory Group (TAG) and Sustainability Hub Programme Director

Trish has spent most of her career in the global pharmaceutical industry, working in manufacturing, product launch, operational excellence and project management. She is currently working on many programmes globally which support the delivery of medicines to emerging and established markets.

She is a former chemical engineering lecturer and is passionate about the need for continuing professional development and high-quality training. Trish is also a former member of the IChemE Board of Trustees.
